Connie Cunningham, Child Nutrition Director
“We were absolutely thrilled to be able to receive produce from local farmers via the Farm to School program. Some of our schools were able to feature items on their menus that are generally not made available to us due to pricing challenges. We received fresh basil, honey, acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash. The managers had a wonderful time seasoning these items to perfection to serve to the students of Edgefield County. The asparagus was phenomenal, so glad to receive the apples and blueberries as well. The fresh blueberries were delicious in our smoothies and made-from-scratch muffins. We were immensely appreciative of this opportunity. Edgefield is one of two districts in South Carolina that doesn't receive commodities. Therefore, DOD produce is not available to us. It is our hope that you will offer this program again in the near future.”
Empowering Nutrition Staff Through SC Farm to School: Fresh, Local, and Healthy Meals
School nutrition staff play a pivotal role in the South Carolina Farm to School program. They bridge the gap between fresh, local produce and healthy meals. By sourcing food directly from local farmers, nutrition teams can provide high-quality, seasonal ingredients that enhance the taste and nutritional value of students’ meals. Participating in the program not only supports the local agricultural community, but it also means staff can introduce students to the benefits of fresh, wholesome foods while creating opportunities for nutrition education and fostering lifelong, healthy eating habits. With resources and support from the Farm to School initiative, nutrition staff can elevate their meal offerings and be champions of community health and sustainability.
